Fall 2014 Speakeasy Literary Retreat

Speakeasy Literary Retreats are a blend of writing time, critique time, and relaxed social time with faculty and attendees to discuss craft and the industry.

Join us in September 2014 for a creative retreat for novelists and picture book artists near downtown Portland’s Pearl District. Registration includes a keynote dinner, a faculty 1-1 session, a faculty-led critique group, and afternoon salons with editors.

We will be taking advantage of the location to tour Portland’s distilleries and chocolatiers and Powell’s Bookstore between programming. These events are optional; inquire for cost.

The Sessions: A combination of social opportunities, a faculty 1-1 session, and a faculty-led critique session with separate tracks for artists and novelists.
The Cost: $300 includes the Thursday Keynote dinner, Friday 1-1 editor session, Saturday critique group and afternoon discussions with industry professionals; an additional $100 may be added for a plus one at the Keynote dinner and optional tours.

Faculty Information

Tamra Tuller is an Editor at Chronicle Books. She got her start in the Scholastic Book Clubs and then moved to Scholastic’s trade division at Blue Sky Press. She was an editor in the Penguin Young Readers Group before moving to Chronicle. She is primarily focused on literary middle grade and young adult fiction. She has worked with such authors as Ruta Sepetys, Kathryn Erskine, Beth Kephart, Kari Ann Holt, and Hannah Moskowitz.

Sharyn November is Senior Editor for Viking Children’s Books and Editorial Director of Firebird Books. Her many authors have included Laurie Halse Anderson, John Barnes, Charles de Lint, Alison Goodman, Elizabeth Hand, Diana Wynne Jones, Ellen Klages, Patrice Kindl, Kelly Link, Nnedi Okorafor, and Jane Yolen. Firebirds Rising, the second anthology she edited for the imprint, was named a World Fantasy Award Finalist, and she herself has been named a Finalist twice for her editorial work. Melissa Manlove is an Editor at Chronicle Books. She has been with Chronicle for nine years. The majority of her list is picture books—fiction and non-fiction—but she is passionate about all genres of children’s books for infants to age 12. The artists she has worked with include Melissa Sweet, Vladimir Radunsky, Tom Lichtenheld, Jeremy Tankard, Meilo So, Dan Santat, Christopher Neal, and Ed Young. She has 15 years of children’s bookselling experience.

Abby Ranger is a senior editor at HarperCollins Children’s Books. Her current focus is middle grade fiction, but she enjoys working on a bit of everything: picture books, chapter books, and young adult fiction. Her first job in publishing was at Scholastic, and she spent four years at Disney-Hyperion. She has been lucky enough to work with such authors and artists as Cinda Williams Chima, Laura Godwin and Ann M. Martin, Katherine Marsh, Jon J Muth, Victoria Schwab, Melissa Sweet, Kiera Stewart, and Maggie Stiefvater. She occasionally tweets at @ranger_abby.

Registration

$300 includes…

– Thursday keynote dinner

$100 may be added for a plus one at the Thursday keynote dinner. This individual may also join the optional brewery and chocolate tours attended by retreat faculty and other attendees. Limited availability.

Venue Information

The Four Diamond Heathman Hotel in downtown Portland was one of Conde Nast Traveler’s “World’s Best Places to Stay.” It is walking distance to Powell’s Books and Portland’s famous Pearl District.

*Published Authors: If you stay at the Heathman, please send us your booklist. The Heathman Hotel stocks autographed copies of guests’ books in their famous library. If you choose, the hotel will purchase your book and leave it in your room to be autographed and added to their collection.*

Accommodations at the Heathman are not included in the retreat fee. Attendees may stay at another local hotel as you choose. If you choose to stay at the Heathman, rooms are offered to Speakeasy guests while availability lasts, starting at $199/night under registration code Speakeasy14.

The Faculty Sessions

Friday Faculty 1-1 Session: This is your time with an editor. Use it to workshop a query, new sketches, first pages or a tough scene. Ask her how to strengthen your weaknesses or highlight your strengths. Brainstorm ways to bring your series to the next level. This is your time. Get what you want out of it. Please bring pages or illustrations with you. While there is no official page limit, be mindful of the 30 minute time limit. Faculty will not have reviewed pages ahead of time.

Saturday Critique Session: Bring pages or a dummy to be read and shared with your entire (novelist or artist) track; make at least 8 copies, please. The piece you share can be a new piece or something you’ve reworked after your 1-1, or if you’d rather harness the group mind to brainstorm a new idea, that’s fine, too. Again, this is your time.

Novelists: The Business center will be available to participants who need to print or prepare materials for the Critique Session.

Artists: please contact retreat@speakeasyliterary.com upon registration for options to have print-ready materials ready for Saturday if needed.

Other Programming

Industry Conversations: Fireside style chats for you to ask those burning questions about children’s publishing, the editorial and acquisition process, and anything else you’d like to know!

Optional Track Digital Publishing Overview/Q&A: You’ve been watching the digital publishing phenomenom. Maybe you’ve been considering it. Maybe you just have questions. How much work is it – really? How can you contract for covers, editing, and digital conversion? Should you do it yourself and if so, what are your resources? Where do you get your ISBN and do you really need one? How friendly are the retailer portals? What are the nuances of each retailer? How do you get merchandising on crowded retail sites? Get the answers to these and your other questions by dropping in our digital publishing pro who has been successfully involved in the digital launches of NYT and USA Today bestselling authors.

Optional Tours

Brewery and chocolate tours are being developed and will be finalized depending on registrant interest and volume.
